I was given the pleasure to inherit two aprons from Helen, an elderly lady from our church out of her large collection of aprons. I absolutely fell in love with the Hanky Apron, it was fashioned so simply but beautifully that I have to share the details:)
I hope the following explains the build of the apron well enough, but if you have any questions, just comment and I’ll do my best to answer. (Sorry the apron was wrinkled, I do not have an iron at the time:)
Supplies Needed,
5 Ladies Handkerchiefs, ( I plan on making one out of five ‘vintage’ and mixed hankies’)
1/2 Lace Border (vintage preferred)
Sewing Machine or Delicate Handwork, thats it!
Below is a quick sketch I did of the layout to give you an idea of how it was pieced together.
Pockets made from one hanky folded in half.
Pocket divided with seam, and photo of Hanky #1 folded and cut diagonally, sewed to the sides.
A look at the underside seams and the lace edging.
I would love to post pics up of finished aprons that are made from this post. So please email me at mary@apronofgrace.com with photos and a brief description of your experience sewing the apron and I will showcase them on Apron of Grace!

Thanks so much for sharing. My mom passed away and I have a box of her “hanky’s”! I’m using some for some shadowboxes for my brothers but now I’m going to look at them to see if I can make an apron! I love to cook and it would be such a special way to remember my mom too!
I am sorry for the loss of your mother, but that is awesome you are finding creative ways to share the memories:) Please email me a pic if you do get to make an apron!!!!

I am hoping to do a segment later on beginner sewing. Please let me know if you would be interested!
This brought back memories of when I was a little girl going to church Sunday morning. Momma would take out a handkerchief, take a little change and place it just so in the hanky, and she would then tie it up so I wouldn’t loose it. I still have one of those hanky’s, and I have told the children stories about the Church Hanky……….Thank you momma.
Thank you Mom for sharing them memories on my blog:)
Beautiful!! I’d love for you to submit this to the M&T Spotlight at http://www.makeandtakes.com/spotlight
Thank you Laurel for the consideration! I will be checking that out tomorrow to submit.
Mary,
This is so sweet of you to write this about Helen’s apron. She really wanted them to go someone special and I’m sure they did.
Thank again, Jan
Thank you Jan, I will cherish them for many years:)
My Mother had a stack of fresh hanky’s every time we went to church. As a small girl, I learned how to iron on all her hanky’s. She would tell me stories and teach me to iron all the corners down first. I folded each one to match the compartment in her purse. We would go to church and when the tears of joy flowed with someone getting saved…she was always there with a fresh hanky.
Thanks for the memories.
Helen
That is some lovely memories Helen, thanks for sharing;)
